Cataract Surgery Guide: Consultation, Procedure & Recovery Explained

Thinking About Cataract Surgery? Here’s What to Expect

Are you experiencing blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, or increased glare from sunlight? These could be signs of cataracts. If you’re wondering what the cataract surgery process is like, here is a step by step guide to help you understand what to expect, from your first consultation to your recovery.

Infographic showing the six steps of the cataract surgery journey: consultation, financial counselling, pre-operative assessment, surgery preparation, surgery day, and post-operative care.

Step 1: Cataract Consultation

Your journey begins with a comprehensive cataract consultation. During this appointment, we will perform a thorough eye examination to assess your eye health, confirm the diagnosis, and discuss whether cataract surgery is the right option for you.

Step 2: Financial Counselling

After your consultation, we will provide financial counselling to explain the costs of cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is generally claimable through insurance and Medisave. If you are unsure about your coverage or claims process, don’t worry, we’ll guide you through every step.

Step 3: Pre-operative Assessment

Once you decide to proceed with surgery, we’ll perform your pre-operative assessment, often on the same day. This involves detailed measurements of your eyes to determine the most suitable intraocular lens implant for your vision needs.

After the assessment, you’ll meet with Dr Xu again to review the results, discuss your lens options, and address any questions or concerns before surgery.

Depending on hospital availability, your surgery can usually be scheduled as early as one week after your initial consultation.

Step 4: Preparing for Surgery

Before your surgery, our optometrists will explain everything you need to know about preparing for the procedure and caring for your eyes afterwards. We’ll also go through your admission details so you know exactly what to expect.

If any questions come to mind after you return home, you’re always welcome to contact us via WhatsApp.

Step 5: Surgery Day

On the day of your surgery, simply arrive at the hospital at your scheduled admission time. Dr Xu will perform your cataract surgery, which typically takes about 15–20 minutes.

After the procedure, the nursing team will monitor you to ensure you are comfortable before you are discharged. It is normal for your vision to be blurry on the day of surgery due to the eye drops used during the procedure. A protective eye shield will also be provided for your safety.

Step 6: Recovery and Follow-up

Most patients notice a significant improvement in their vision by the next day. Before coming for your first post-operative review with Dr Xu, you may remove the protective eye shield as instructed.

Your follow-up appointments are typically scheduled:

The day after surgery

One week after surgery

One month after surgery

These post-operative consultations are generally claimable under your insurance as part of your cataract surgery care.
